KwaZulu-Natal Picnic Spots

If there is one thing our province is not short of, it’s places to picnic (well, actually we’re not short of much)! Looking for a little time outdoors with a loved one or the family? KwaZulu-Natal offers so many spots to picnic at that’s completely budget friendly! Our weather is warm throughout the year, so picnicking can happen any time of the year.

If you’re in and around Durban, and you’re not wanting to travel too far out, visit The Cube on Innes Road in Morningside. With an actual big sized 3D cube, covered with images representing things to do in KwaZulu-Natal, it’s quite the unique spot. Not to mention the 180 degree views of Durban, including the world-renowned Moses Mabhida Stadium in front of the backdrop of the Indian Ocean.

Nestled in the valley of a thousand hills, is Bothas Hill. Find the perfect spot where you can take in scenes of the numerous green hills, cliffs and valleys along the banks of the Umgeni River, while it flows all the way between the Indian Ocean and the Drakensberg Mountains. If you head right to the top of Botha’s Hill, you should be able to enjoy views of the Inanda Dam, which is definitely a site for sore eyes.

Up the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, close to Ballito, you can visit Rain Farm Game & Lodge, a wildlife sanctuary which offers three different picnic options for day visitors. If you’re looking for more than just a picnic, guess what? You’re in the right place! Take a game drive with your partner and enjoy the very best that nature has to offer, after feasting on their readymade picnic baskets of course!

Looking for a view of the Drakensberg mountains? No problem, we’ve got you covered! Enjoy a pre-packed picnic basket from Hartford House in Mooi River, while looking out onto the most magical views of Giant’s Castle.

Of course, KwaZulu-Natal is blessed to have many beautiful dam areas which are open to the public to visit. Most of these areas are managed well and require a small entrance fee which is used to conserve and maintain the area. With water activities to partake in, as well as picnicking spots and braai or barbeque areas, it’s the perfect day outing for the whole family. Here are a few dams that one can visit for a full day filled with fun;

  • Shongweni Dam
  • Inanda Dam
  • Hazelmere Dam
  • Midmar Dam (the home to the annual swimming competition known as the ‘Midmar Mile’).

With so much to do an explore KwaZulu-Natal, why would you want to be anywhere else?
